GRUNDY CENTER — Just days after announcing the acquisition of three North Iowa newspapers, Nelson Media Company has confirmed another addition to its growing portfolio: The Grundy Register in Grundy Center.

Earlier this week, Nelson Media Company announced it would acquire the Winnebago County Tribune, Parkersburg Eclipse News Review, and Butler County Tribune from Mid-America Publishing. The addition of The Grundy Register continues that momentum as the company expands its presence across Iowa.

“We are excited to announce another acquisition and the addition of The Grundy Register to our growing company,” said Chris Nelson, owner and founder of Nelson Media Company. “We saw a great opportunity here — not only to grow our company, but to take over a strong newspaper in a community that really cares about itself.”

Mid-America Publishing, based in Hampton, ceased operations earlier this month, leaving several newspapers across Iowa in transition. Nelson Media Company has moved quickly to step in and continue operations.

The company plans to publish its first edition of The Grundy Register under new ownership next week, ensuring no disruption for readers, advertisers, or public notices.

“What excites me most is working with the school and the community, which has a rich history in the state of Iowa,” Nelson said.

Nelson Media Company is already familiar with the Grundy Center community through its video production division, which worked on several projects in the area over the past year.

“It really gave us a great sense of the tradition in this town — academics, sports, and a strong sense of pride and love for the city,” Nelson said. “That’s what stood out right away.”

Looking ahead, the company plans to provide comprehensive, hyper-local coverage in Grundy Center and throughout Grundy County.

“I cannot wait to cover the community, but also the entire county itself,” Nelson said.

As part of the transition, John Jensen will serve as Managing Editor for both news and sports coverage. Several other key team members will also remain involved, helping ensure a strong and seamless transition.

“We have a great group in place, and we look forward to working with everyone,” Nelson said.

The latest acquisition continues a period of rapid growth for Nelson Media Company, which has expanded aggressively across Iowa in recent years.

“Our mission is simple — build strong newspapers in strong communities,” Nelson said. “We’re excited to get to work in Grundy Center.”
